I spent several years working with small-business owners on advertising.

Advertising can be very effective.

Sometimes the problem genuinely is that too few people know the business exists.

But not every revenue problem is an awareness problem.

Over the years, I’ve also seen opportunity sitting in former customer files, dormant supplier relationships and a small number of trusted professional relationships.

Those opportunities tend to be less visible.

Nobody is selling them to you.

There’s no new platform to learn.

No campaign to launch.

Sometimes it’s simply a matter of looking carefully at relationships the business has already spent years creating.

I’m not against looking outward.

I just think it’s worth looking nearby first.
